Herman the German Friendship Cake
Ten days ago I was presented with a tub of mixture which I was told was Herman the German Friendship Cake.
I took the cake mixture and promised to look after Herman until it was time to bake him and pass him onto three more people.
It turns out that Herman is a little like a chain letter in that you get given him, you tend him and grow him for 10 days and then you make your cake and pass the other three pots of mixture onto friends to make their own friendship cake.
I looked after Herman and baked him this morning and he was delicious (ops forgot I was on a diet when I dug into a huge piece this afternoon)!
If your interested in starting your own Herman it is very simple
Ingredients
• 140 gms plain flour
• 225 gms caster sugar
• 1 packet of active dry yeast
• Half a pint of warm milk
• 2 fl oz. of warm water
Method
1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water for 10 minutes then stir.
2. Add the flour and sugar then mix thoroughly.
3. Slowly stir in the warm milk.
4. Cover the bowl in a clean cloth.
5. Leave in a cool dry place for 24 hours
6. Now proceed from day one of the 10 day cycle.
