Valentines day. How do you celebrate with your loved one?

valentines-day

Sharing the love with food and bubbles at home, is what we do on valentines day.

I am sure most of you know by now, that John and I love to eat out at one of our favourite restaurants. But on valentines day we make an exception and never eat out. Instead we come up with other ways to celebrate the day of love. This all stems back to our very first valentines day together.

Even though it was over 20 years ago I remember it well!  I had travelled from the UK (my then home) to spend a couple of weeks  in New Zealand with John (yes we had a long distance romance for many years). We were travelling around the North Island and were in Rotorua (the hot springs area) on the 14th February. After a day of visiting all the tourist attractions, we had a relaxing spa and then headed out for dinner.

Neither of us had realised it was Valentines Day and were surprised to see the restaurant was completely decked out in pink, with more balloons than floor space and red roses on all the tables. And then the penny dropped! I enjoyed a wonderful serenade by a lovely Spanish man in his sombrero and about 20 people came to ask John if he wanted to buy me roses (none of which were bought, I may add). It was a lovely night, but a little over the top for us. We laughed about it and made a pact to celebrate our Valentines Day at home after that.

We always celebrate the night together with a bottle of bubbles and a lovely meal. I try to be inventive with the food I prepare and always bring out the heart shaped cookie cutter and anything else with a heart I can find.

This year we had to celebrate early, John is out of town with work so now I am able to SHARE some ideas of how we celebrated our special day on Wednesday.

There were heart shaped cheese straws, followed by smoked salmon hearts and blinis with sour cream on top.

Ice cream is the way to Johns heart, so we finished with ice cream hearts (yes out came the cookie cutter again), sprinkled with maltesers and homemade fudge (I was up at 7 am making it)!.

In between all the cooking and cutting, I also made my own special card for John. It was again a lovely evening, even though there were no balloons, roses or Spanish serenade.

How do you SHARE Valentines day? Would you like to  SHARE with us your valentines day plans, special stories or any tips to pass on to make other people’s day special.

Thanks for the inspiration Rachel. My boys made their daddy a heart shaped Red Velvet cake topped with pink icing. And they had lovely heart shaped mash sweet potato with their dinner [2 hearts each!] Love cookie cutters.
